Transport Operations Manager

We are seeking a Transport Operations Manager to oversee a fleet of 60 trucks in a growing haulage company. This role is crucial for ensuring that customer deliveries are executed efficiently and that both vehicles and drivers are operated to their best potential. The Transport Operations Manager will report directly to the Directors and will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations across Traffic, Warehouse, and Fleet Management.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Traffic Operations Management:
- Manage local, national, and pallet network traffic operations, covering for holidays, sickness, and absences.
- Allocate vehicles and manage drivers within Operators License limitations, considering customer requirements and fleet configuration.
- Execute customer work through all stages of service delivery, including direct customer contact as needed.
- Maximise vehicle earnings and optimise fleet resources, fine-tuning operations to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
- Ensure all deliveries and collections are completed on time.
- Warehouse Operation:
- Manage day-to-day operations including vehicle returns, loading, reloading, and trunk loading.
- Proactively manage the warehouse, ensuring effective coordination with the Transport Manager, HR, and Health and Safety teams.
- Schedule staff rotas and manage the quality and effectiveness of staff duties.
- Fleet Maintenance:
- Ensure the fleet is maintained according to vehicle roadworthiness standards and legislative requirements.
- Monitor vehicle defects and coordinate with the operations team for maintenance, servicing, MOTs, and inspections.
- Managing Operational Staff:
- Handle recruitment, training, and retention of staff.
- Manage staff resource requirements using agencies and subcontractors as needed.
- Ensure compliance with transport legislation and company policies.
- Financials:
- Assist in developing budgets, accounting processes, and management accounts with support from the company accountant.
- Provide weekly performance reporting and support the sales invoicing process.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- CPC Holder preferred.
- Proven leadership and line management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and tactical decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Detailed knowledge of freight force bonus schemes and incident management systems.
- Experience in training design and delivery.
- Comprehensive understanding of legislation and regulations applicable to the haulage industry.
